Comfort to the core
Tempur Sealy is focused on advancements, sustainability
by DAN JONES
Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder, got the Sealy mattress brand rolling in Sealy, Texas, in 1881.
As Haynes made cotton-filled mattresses for friends and neighbors, his product took off. In 1906, Earl Edwards purchased Haynes' patents and expanded the company nationally.
The business survived the Great Depression and more ownership changes, evolving in 2012 into Tempur Sealy International, which includes Tempur-Pedic, Sealy and Kirkland Signature™ Stearns & Foster. Sealy was voted the most trusted mattress brand in the U.S. by American shoppers based on the 2021 BrandSpark American Trust Study.
Innovation first
Tempur Sealy has been at the forefront of advancements in the industry, with its Sealy Posturepedic technology—mattresses that use a combination of foam and pocket coil springs to improve a person's sleep posture—emerging in 1950. The company has since offered adjustable bases for a range of ergonomic positions, with modern bells and whistles like underbed lighting, USB ports and wireless remotes.
“Our signature Sealy Posturepedic Plus Collection features our best quality specialty foams, the highest level of support, the most advanced motion-absorbing coils and all-over cooling comfort for the deep, relaxing sleep you need to take on tomorrow,” says Steve Rusing, Tempur Sealy president of U.S. sales.
Rewarding quality
“We believe in improving the sleep of more people every night, all around the world,” Rusing says. “At the heart of all we do is a focus on the needs of our customer, and to deliver on those needs we are passionate about, like solving sleep problems and providing sleep solutions by thinking big and differently. Most importantly, we always are focused on doing the right thing—for our employees and customers.”

Sustainability
The environment matters to Tempur Sealy as well. With global responsibility in mind, Tempur Sealy aims to be carbon neutral in its global wholly owned operations by 2040.
The company achieved an 8.4% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per unit at its wholly owned manufacturing and logistics operations in 2021. In addition, Tempur Sealy improved the percentage of waste diverted from landfills from its U.S. wholly owned manufacturing operations to 94% in 2022, compared with 91% in 2020. It hopes to achieve zero landfill waste at its wholly owned U.S. and European manufacturing facilities by the end of 2022.
Tempur Sealy also installed solar panel technology at its largest manufacturing facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“At Tempur Sealy, sustainability means operating a world-class bedding business while minimizing our impact on the environment and having a positive impact on the communities we operate in,” Rusing says. “In our products, we constantly pursue opportunities to foster recycling, use recycled materials and [make sure] all of our raw materials and finished goods meet the content and emission standards for volatile organic compounds. This focus is not new or short term—we have been focused on sustainability for years.”
Helping hand
The Tempur Sealy Foundation pledged $2 million to support a pediatric sleep center at Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington. Its European operations have contributed monetary aid and 1,100 bedding products to Ukrainian children and families at refugee centers.
“We are committed to carry out our global responsibility to protect the environment and the communities in which we operate,” says Steve Rusing, Tempur Sealy president of U.S. sales.—DJ
