The perfect beach read
When three strangers visit a beachfront property for lease, the women decide to pool their resources, and their business, the Boardwalk Bookshop, is born.
Costco Connection What inspired your novel The Boardwalk Bookshop?
Susan Mallery What if, I thought, three women who didn’t know each other toured a beachfront business property for lease in Los Angeles and pooled their resources to rent it together? Bree owns the bookshop, Mikki the gift shop and Ashley the bakery. [It] is a story of how friends can become family, and how the family we choose can transform our lives.
CC Do you have a favorite among the three main characters?
SM Oh, that’s such a hard question because it feels disloyal to choose one character over another. … But the truth is, while I do love them all in different ways, I have a special softness in my heart for Mikki. She’s the ultimate nurturer. … She’s funny and fiercely loyal—and [she] knows her wine, which you’ve got to love.
CC What else would you like readers to know?
SM I cherish my readers! When I write, I start every day with my readers in mind. I know that somewhere out there is a reader who will need this precise story, that it will help her through a difficult time in her life. You motivate me every day to keep writing.—Stacy Wells
