- Bezel The ring of metal around a watch face to hold the glass in place. Rotating bezels can be used for measuring increments of time.
- Movement The mechanism which makes a watch work. Automatic and Quartz are the two most common movement types Costco sells.
- Crystal The glass on a watch. Sapphire and Mineral Crystal are the two most common types of crystal found on a watch.
- Luminous Lume is the material which makes a watch useable in the dark. Typically found on the watch hands and hour markers the lume will glow in the dark making the watch readable.
- Chronograph These watches are capable of precise time measurement. Using the push buttons found on the side of these watches, it is possible to measure time more accurately.
- Clasp How the bracelet or band is connected to secure the watch to a wrist.
- Crown The crown is a grooved knob found on the outside of the watch case and can be used. On automatic watches the crown can be used for manual winding. Chronograph watches can be either automatic or quartz.
Types of Watches

- Automatic watches use spring tension to drive the components. These watches are wound by movement of the watch on a wrist or by manually winding the watch using the crown. These watches do not use a battery.
- Quartz watches use a battery in conjunction with a Quartz crystal to make the watch run. These watches are capable of running non-stop for years without a battery change.
- Solar watches are quartz watches. The difference is that solar watches can charge their battery using energy derived from sunlight. These watches can last many years without changing or servicing the watch.
- Chronograph watches have sub-dials on the main dial for recording milliseconds, seconds, minutes and even hour intervals. Push buttons found on the side of the watch can be used to start, stop, and reset the timer functions.
Crystals
Sapphire crystal is best known for its scratch resistance and strength. Mineral crystal is commonly used because it withstands cracking.Water Resistance
Water Resistance is generally measured in feet, meters, and atmospheres. Displayed on the face or caseback of the watch, the water resistance is a guideline for how well a watch is protected against water. Watches rated to a depth of 100 meters (328 feet) can be safe to wear while swimming. Watches rated to a depth of 200+ meters (656 feet) can be safe to wear for recreational diving.Meters | Feet | Atmospheres | |
10 | 33 | 1 | |
50 | 164 | 5 | |
100 | 328 | 10 | |
150 | 492 | 15 | |
200 | 656 | 20 |
Case and Bracelet Sizing
The case size is a measurement of the watch from top to bottom in millimeters. The larger the case size, the bigger the watch will look on your wrist. The bracelet length in combination with the case size will be the maximum circumference a watch will fit.Care and Maintenance
Keep your watch away from dust and dirt. Always ensure the crown of your watch is closed securely at all times. Water resistance does not mean waterproof. The rubber seals on watches can break down from frequent contact with water.Shop Watches
