Climate Action Plan

Doing the right thing — for our members, employees, suppliers, communities where we do business, investors and the health of our global community — is a driving force for continuous improvement at Costco and creates the foundation of our Climate Action Plan.

Introduction

At Costco, we remain committed to doing our part to avoid catastrophic climate change in partnership with our global stakeholders. These efforts are both a business imperative and the right thing to do. Our Climate Action Plan is our roadmap to lowering carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e) emissions.

Our Holistic Approach

Our Foundational Beliefs:

  • The subjects we address are multi-faceted, as evidenced by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) we have adopted (as explained in our Sustainability Commitment introduction).
  • Our approach must encompass worldwide operations and global supply chains.
  • We must use evidence-based best practices and take actions rooted in science.

Our Sustainability Principles:

  • For Costco to thrive, the world needs to thrive. We are committed to doing our part to help.
  • We focus on issues related to our business and where we can contribute to real, results-driven positive impact.
  • We do not have all of the answers, are learning as we go and seek continuous improvement.

Belief in a Just Transition

We align our decarbonization objectives with our commitments to human rights, diversity, equity and inclusion, life above land and below water, water conservation and waste reduction. That's because we believe our transition to a low carbon business model also should represent a just transition for our employees, members, suppliers and the communities we serve.
