The Unofficial Guide to Dining Room Light Fixtures

Let there be light! Fixtures, that is.

Need a little help choosing a pendant or chandelier that complements those dinner-table conversations? Costco.com is here to help put the final touch on memorable meals.

1. Style isn't everything

Consider style and function. You may be drawn to the impressive glow of a chandelier, but if you're in a smaller space, pick up a pendant. Hung closer to eye level, pendants can offer more direct lighting.

Pro-Tip: Chandeliers with shades can be altered throughout the year. Opt for darker, more dramatic colors in the fall, and warmer hues in the spring and summer.

2. Sizable selections

When selecting a chandelier, err on the side of too big. If mounted above a table surface, the chandelier's diameter should equal roughly a third to half of its width.

Pro-Tip: Not every activity calls for mood lighting. Additional recessed lighting or wall sconces help to highlight artwork or brighten the room while the kids tackle homework.

3. Weigh your options

A central light fixture is a powerful addition to any room. How commanding do you want it to be? Weigh its size and shape against the room's proportions, especially its height.

4. How low can you go?

The rule of thumb is that fixtures should hang 30 to 32 inches above table surfaces. Or, low enough to effectively illuminate your dining space without being a distraction.

Pro-Tip: This rule works best with a standard 8-foot ceiling. For higher ceilings, add 3 inches of hanging height for each additional foot.

5. Light it right

Choose wisely while bulb shopping. "Warm" bulbs are ideal for rich lighting, cool bulbs will produce a blue tint. Don't forget the dimmer switch.

Pro-Tip: To determine proper wattage, multiply the width of the room by its length, then multiply that number by 1.5.
