6 Steps to a Small Closet Overhaul

Don't let dimensions hold you back - when the setup is right, a compact closet can be highly efficient.

Squeeze every last drop of storage out of your small closet with these tips from Costco.

1. Aim high

If you have fewer garments that need to be hung, install a tall, narrow shelving unit to make use of the extra space. Store lighter items, such as blankets and pillows, on top.

Pro-Tip: Puffy coats are cozy, but they tend to monopolize closet space. Use storage bags to bring them down to size and protect them from moths and mildew.

2. Divide and conquer

Sharing a closet? Install an extra rod above for additional hanging space. Use separate bins or storage towers to divide the area. Use a two-part hamper for easy sorting.

Pro-Tip: Stow items you rotate - scarves, handbags, hats - on hanging shoe shelves. Hang belts from coat hooks for added visibility.

3. Keep shoes contained

Sloppy shoe storage can make an entire closet look chaotic. Organize your shoes with adjustable shelving, or use the back of the closet door for a hanging shoe storage option.

Pro-Tip: Install floating shelves outside of your closet to display your high heels.

4. Closet overhaul

Closet units aren't just for dreamy walk-ins - they come in all sizes. Opt for wood that's 100 percent cedar, which makes it aromatic and repellent to mildew and insects.

Pro-Tip: If there's a willful mustiness in the air, use a little freshener. Take the DIY route by packing potpourri into a small fabric satchel. Pin it to the wall behind your clothes.

5. Think outside the closet

There's no harm in showcasing your wardrobe if it's smartly organized and looking sleek. Use a garment rack or a boutique closet to take advantage of any spare space.

Pro-Tip: For a fitting room feel, use wooden hangers or a closet door. If space allows, install good lighting to help you spot your next ensemble.

6. Take the mirror outside

Save space inside the closet by setting up a full-length mirror outside of it. This will allow you to use the back of the closet door for even more storage.

Pro-Tip: Another smart solution? Have the best of both worlds with a behind-the-door cabinet with a full-length mirror.
