7 Ways to Childproof Your Home

Have little ones at home? Help eliminate hazards with these tips.

1. Cover that fireplace

Between the heat and the brick or marble hearth, your fireplace can pose a hazard. Invest in a cover, then create a barrier using a baby gate.

Pro-Tip: Baby bumpers meant for lining cribs can be used to pad the sharp edges of doors, covers or screens. Use a gate to block off stairs.

2. Don't forget about power sources

Electrical outlets are easy targets for toddlers. Use a childproof surge protector to help prevent accidents, and always bundle cords well out of reach. Removable plastic outlet covers also can be effective safeguards when used correctly.

Pro-Tip: If you have extra outlets that aren't being used, replace the outer frame plates with solid plates.

3. Keep watch on your nursery

Have a baby monitor nearby. Place cribs, beds and other climbable furniture at a distance from windows. Anchor anything that can tip over.

Pro-Tip: Safety straps are a wise addition to a changing table, but they're no substitute for your attention. Keep the changing station stocked with wipes, diapers and clothes.

4. Baby play center

Sometimes you simply need to be hands-free. Create a secure area for crawlers (or waddlers!) using baby gates and padded mats.

Pro-Tip: Unplug and store small appliances such as irons and toasters. Invest in a console for permanent electronics, such as a TV, placing safety latches on any cabinets or drawers that are low to the floor.

5. No strings attached

Avoid dangling strings wherever possible and dress your nursery windows in cordless blinds. If you have blinds elsewhere, keep the strings knotted and tucked high.

Pro-Tip: The best way to identify hazards is to simply get on your hands and knees and see the world from a toddler's perspective. Consider everything from sharp corners to objects that would be easy to climb.

6. Bathroom buffers

Always keep the toilet lid down and use lid locks. Invest in anti-scalding devices for faucets, and childproofing locks for medicine cabinets.

Pro-Tip: Use doorknob covers to keep tiny tots out of the bathroom when you're not there to supervise.

7. Inspect the crib

Test the crib in your nursery to make sure the slats are positioned close enough together. If you can fit a soda can between two slats, the gap is too wide.

Pro-Tip: Install a smoke detector in the nursery. Check regularly to verify that it's working properly.
