5 Design Tweaks to Make Your Living Space Appear Bigger Than It Is

Square footage ain't nothing but a number. Think big and utilize some spatial tricks when sketching out a future design for your humble abode.

To help you maximize your space, we've coupled five of our favorite design tricks with small-apartment optimizers you can find at Costco.com.

1. Mirror, mirror

Magicians use mirrors for a reason. Create that "large room" illusion using reflective surfaces to amplify natural light while elongating the walls.

Pro-Tip: Don't hold back here. Line an entire wall, parlor-style, with varying shapes and sizes of mirrors. Or, if you're a fan of symmetry, hang three mirrors behind the couch instead of one.

2. Slim-leg furniture

The clean, elegant lines created by furniture with slender legs will extend the eye upward. Having visible space underneath larger pieces lends itself to a more refined and expansive look.

Pro-Tip: If you have hardwood floors or tile, laying a thin (not plush) rug under the furniture will accentuate a svelte piece and highlight the efficient layout of your mini-manor.

3. Wallbeds with storage

Open up space to exercise, relax or entertain by tucking away your bed — all while designating an area for storage.

Pro-Tip: Use baskets or decorative boxes to hide the items that you don't want seen. You can also line the sides of the storage cabinets with hooks for hanging jackets.

4. Garment rack

Bring your wardrobe front and center, then relish the possibilities of newly vacant closet space. Place a dresser or an armoire in the closet to act as a space-saving catch-all for the items you'd rather not display.

Pro-Tip: If your closet is shallow and wide, consider pushing the head of your bed into the alcove to generate space in the room and create a cozy landing spot for sleep.
