As easy as one-two-three

Detectives Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch join forces once again in Michael Connelly’s latest book, The Dark Hours.

Costco Connection What inspired this story?

Michael Connelly The country has been through a difficult two years. I was interested in delving into that pressure-cooker situation and chose Renée Ballard as the entree into a world where basically we see a good person trying to do a good job and we ride with her through this new world. Los Angeles always seems to feel like a place on the verge of chaos. The last two years have only heightened that. But there is always inspiration in seeing people who are undaunted by circumstances as they carry out their mission. I felt the responsibility of that and wanted to show Renée operating in an already difficult job that’s become even more difficult—without falling into an abyss.

CC What else would you like readers to know?

MC [This] is Renée’s third book with Harry Bosch. They’ve worked together on cases, fed off each other’s differences, and while Renée is at the forefront of this book, they still need each other. Renée needs Harry to be there when the darkness gets overwhelming, and Harry needs Renée to complete the mission he’s had from the beginning: Everybody counts or nobody counts.
